Hyperbaric Chambers at Home: Siting, Power and Access

Hard shell hyperbaric chamber installed in a timber and stone living room

This is a guide to the equipment and the room it goes in. Whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy is appropriate for you is a conversation for your physician, not for a product page, and nothing here is medical advice. What we can be useful about is the hardware: what the three formats are, what the numbers on the spec sheet describe, and what a chamber asks of your house.

The three formats

The chambers we carry cover three quite different situations.

  • OLV-YTD04, hard shell, lying: an aluminium alloy chamber with a slide type entry door, for one person lying down, operating up to 2.0 ATA.
  • OLV-RW01, accessible: a 1.3 ATA chamber available in soft and wheelchair compatible configurations, with a foldable design for storage.
  • OLV-YZM02, two person, sitting: a 2.0 ATA hard shell room with two seats, which changes the experience from lying alone to sitting with someone.

Format usually decides itself. If the user has mobility needs, the wheelchair compatible chamber is the starting point. If two people want to use it together, or anyone is uncomfortable lying enclosed, the sitting chamber answers both.

What the pressure rating actually describes

ATA means atmospheres absolute, a multiple of the air pressure at sea level. Chambers are also labelled in PSI above ambient, which is the number that makes the difference concrete.

  • 1.3 ATA is about 4.5 PSI above ambient.
  • 2.0 ATA is about 14.5 PSI above ambient.

The hard shell YTD04 is not fixed at its maximum. It offers selectable working pressures of 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 1.9 and 2.0 ATA, which is worth knowing if more than one person will use it. What pressure and duration are suitable is, again, a clinical question rather than a purchasing one.

Footprint, and the route in

Chambers are large objects that do not disassemble. Measure the route before you measure the room.

The two person chamber is 88 in long, 75 in wide and 78 in high. That is wider than most internal doors and taller than many basement ceilings once you allow clearance to manoeuvre it. The hard shell lying chamber in the size we stock is about 90.6 in long with an external diameter of roughly 35.4 in, with an internal length of about 88.6 in.

Walk the path from the truck to the final position with a tape measure: door widths, the turn at the bottom of a staircase, ceiling obstructions, and whether the final room has a door wide enough at all. More than one chamber has been delivered into a garage because the hallway said no.

Floor loading is a real question

The two person chamber weighs about 750 kg, roughly 1,650 lb, before anybody gets in it. On a ground floor slab that is unremarkable. On a suspended timber floor, or above a basement, it is a question for a structural engineer rather than an assumption. Ask before you order, not after.

The single person chambers are considerably lighter, and the YTD04 rolls on four wheels, which helps both with positioning and with cleaning around it.

Power, air and oxygen

A chamber is not one appliance. It is a chamber plus an oxygen concentrator plus a compressor, and each of those draws power and makes noise.

The two person chamber runs two 20 L concentrators and a 400 LPM compressor. The accessible RW01 integrates its concentrator and compressor, with an oxygen flow of 10 L per minute alongside 120 L per minute of air. Confirm the electrical requirement for your specific configuration and have an electrician provide dedicated circuits rather than sharing a ring with the rest of the room.

Give thought to where the compressor sits. It is the component people wish they had placed differently, because the chamber is quiet and the compressor is not.

Ventilation and the room itself

Choose a room with air movement and a stable temperature. Both hard shell chambers include air conditioning, which handles comfort inside, but the equipment around them still generates heat. Avoid cupboards and sealed alcoves, and keep clearance on the door side so entry and exit are never awkward.

Oxygen delivery and the safety systems

The hard shell chambers use a BIBS system, a built in breathing system delivering oxygen through a mask rather than filling the chamber itself. The two person chamber also has a disinfection lamp.

On the safety side, the YTD04 carries an automated pressure control system, an emergency pressure release valve for rapid decompression, an internal pressure gauge, a transparent viewing window for monitoring from outside and a built in interphone for two way communication. The accessible chamber has real time pressure and oxygen purity monitoring with wireless controls. Read the operating manual properly, and make sure everyone who will use it has done the same.

Comfort inside

The lying chamber includes a mattress and pillow and an internal touch screen. The two person chamber has two massage chairs, a 43 in television, an internal touch screen and seven preset programs. Sessions are not short, so these are not trivial details.

What ownership actually changes

The practical case for owning rather than booking is simple: no appointments, no waiting list, no travel, and a schedule that belongs to you. That is the honest argument, and it is the one worth weighing against the cost of the equipment and the work of siting it properly.

Before you order

Settle four things: which format suits the user, whether the route into the room works, whether the floor carries the weight, and where the compressor lives. Send us the room dimensions and a photograph of the access route and we will tell you plainly whether it fits.
